Anthropic’s $2 trillion IPO is the clearest test yet of where capital goes next

Anthropic is preparing to file its IPO prospectus within days, with trading in New York possible by late September or early October.

Morgan Stanley is favoured for the lead-left mandate, the central advisory role covering valuation and investor allocation, while Goldman Sachs is expected to serve as stabilisation agent overseeing the opening sessions. JPMorgan, Citigroup and Barclays are also expected to take senior positions after providing debt financing.

Investors expect the company to target a valuation above $2 trillion, more than double its current value and potentially surpassing SpaceX as the largest listing ever.

The lead-left appointment is not finalised and could still change.

For crypto, this matters for a reason that has nothing to do with blockchain.

AI has been taking the money crypto lost

The defining feature of crypto’s 2026 has not been a protocol failure or a regulatory crackdown. It has been capital going somewhere else.

Bitcoin ETFs remain roughly $1 billion in net outflow for the year despite a strong August. The crypto IPO class of 2025 trades far below debut prices, with Gemini down around 89%. Kraken, Grayscale, Consensys and Ledger have all shelved listing plans. Crypto custody firm Copper is fielding offers near $200 million after being marketed at $500 million.

Over the same period, SpaceX completed a record $86 billion listing at a $1.78 trillion valuation. Anthropic raised $65 billion in a Series H round at $965 billion post-money.

Growth capital that might once have funded crypto infrastructure has been going into AI companies and the data centres behind them. That is the single most important explanation for why crypto equities have been marked down while token prices recovered.

Anthropic’s listing is the largest test of whether that continues.

The revenue numbers cut both ways

The company’s financial trajectory is genuinely extraordinary and also raises questions.

Anthropic reported July annualised revenue of $65 billion, up from $47 billion in May. That is roughly 38% growth in two months.

Against that, reporting indicates the company faces valuation uncertainty from lower-than-expected sales and increased competition from OpenAI.

A $2 trillion valuation against $65 billion in annualised revenue is roughly 31 times sales. Prediction markets have expressed some scepticism, with pricing concentrated around whether Anthropic closes above or below $1.25 trillion.

The gap between the $965 billion Series H valuation in May and a $2 trillion target four months later is what investors will be asked to accept.

Why the outcome affects crypto either way

Two scenarios, and both are informative.

If Anthropic lists successfully at or near $2 trillion and trades well, it confirms that public market appetite for AI remains intact. Capital continues flowing toward AI infrastructure, and crypto companies attempting to raise or list face the same closed window they have faced all year.

If it prices below expectations or trades poorly, that is the first significant crack in the AI trade. The listing is arriving against a backdrop of high volatility in AI stocks, and a disappointing debut would prompt allocators to reassess how much of their growth exposure sits in one theme.

Historically, capital leaving one high-beta trade has to find another. Crypto has been the obvious alternative in previous cycles.

That said, a rotation is not automatic. Money leaving AI could go to cash, bonds or nothing at all, particularly with the Federal Reserve meeting on 16 September and markets pricing a meaningful chance of a rate increase. Crypto benefits from an AI unwind only if risk appetite survives it.

The link is already visible in token prices

The read-across is not theoretical. AI-linked tokens have been moving on AI news throughout the week.

Bittensor, Near Protocol and Worldcoin all rallied on GPT-6 Astra developments. That correlation cuts in both directions, and those tokens would be the first to feel a poor Anthropic debut.

The broader connection is one Anthropic itself is building. The company has been developing infrastructure for AI agents to transact autonomously, and stablecoin issuers including Circle have been building payment rails for exactly that use case. If AI agents become significant economic actors, crypto is the most plausible settlement layer for machine-to-machine payments.

That is a multi-year proposition rather than a trade. In the near term, the two sectors are competing for the same allocations.

What to watch

Three dates matter.

The prospectus filing, expected within days, will disclose actual financials for the first time and give the market something concrete to price against the $2 trillion figure.

The roadshow near the end of September will reveal whether large institutional investors are willing to support that valuation.

The debut itself, in late September or early October, is the outcome. It falls close to the Fed’s 16 September decision, which means AI sentiment and rate expectations will be resolving at roughly the same time.

For crypto investors, none of this changes any protocol or any regulation. It determines something more basic, which is how much capital is available to come back.

FAQ

What is Anthropic’s IPO timeline?
The prospectus could be filed within days, with a multi-city roadshow near the end of September and trading in New York in late September or early October, if the current schedule holds.

Which banks are involved?
Morgan Stanley is favoured for the lead-left role covering valuation and investor allocation, with Goldman Sachs expected as stabilisation agent. JPMorgan, Citigroup and Barclays are also expected to take senior positions. The lead-left appointment is not yet finalised.

Why does this matter for crypto?
AI has absorbed growth capital that might otherwise have funded crypto infrastructure, contributing to depressed crypto equity valuations and a closed IPO window. A strong Anthropic debut suggests that continues; a weak one could prompt allocators to reconsider concentration in AI.
