Zcash tops $1,000 for the first time as Grayscale’s privacy ETF passes $400 million

Zcash traded above $1,000 for the first time on Friday, reaching an intraday high of $1,050.70, a level the privacy coin has not seen since early 2018.

The move was worth roughly 20% in a single session and close to 100% over the month, pushing ZEC’s market capitalisation toward $17 billion. The token has displaced Dogecoin as the tenth-largest cryptocurrency.

Solana’s rent cut could free 3.08 million SOL, and it is not an airdrop

September 5, 2026

A year ago it traded around $42.

The immediate driver was Grayscale’s ZCSH exchange-traded fund, which launched on NYSE Arca on 25 August and has grown past $414 million in assets less than two weeks later.

The more honest driver was forced buying.

The squeeze did most of the work

Roughly $40 million in Zcash short positions were liquidated in 24 hours around the breakout.

When traders bet against an asset and the price rises sharply, exchanges close those positions automatically. Each closure requires buying the asset back, which pushes the price higher and triggers the next liquidation. The move feeds itself until the bearish positions are gone.

Leverage has expanded alongside the price rather than cooling off. Zcash futures open interest crossed $2 billion for the first time, and 24-hour futures volume climbed above $6 billion, the highest since mid-August.

That matters for what comes next. Open interest at record levels after a squeeze means the same mechanism can run in reverse. The positions that have been added on the way up are now the ones exposed if the price turns.

The ETF numbers need reading carefully

ZCSH is genuinely significant. It is the first US-listed spot ETF offering direct exposure to a privacy coin, converted from a Grayscale trust that had been running for nine years.

But the growth figure is doing less work than it appears.

The fund launched with $304 million in assets inherited from the trust. Its holdings rose from 387,849 ZEC at launch to 428,613 by 3 September, an increase of about 10.5%. Its assets rose from $304 million to $414.7 million, an increase of about 36%.

Most of that gap is price appreciation rather than new money. The Block put net inflows since the 25 August debut at at least $34.4 million, which is real demand but a fraction of the headline asset figure.

Shares outstanding rose to 5.35 million. The fund is custodied by Coinbase and administered by BNY.

Why a privacy coin got an ETF at all

The path here is more interesting than the price.

Privacy coins have spent years being removed from exchanges under regulatory pressure, on the argument that transactions designed to be untraceable are incompatible with anti-money-laundering rules. Zcash’s ability to shield transaction details put it in that category.

The turnaround came in stages rather than at once. The SEC closed its investigation into Zcash in January 2026, removing the regulatory overhang that had kept institutions away. Multicoin Capital disclosed a significant position built during February, arguing that confidential finance is necessary infrastructure for on-chain markets. Grayscale’s conversion followed in August.

The result is a two-tier privacy market. Zcash now has a regulated US investment product and institutional access. Monero, which offers stronger privacy guarantees by default, has no comparable SEC resolution and remains absent from virtually every US exchange.

That divergence has less to do with the technology than with which project happened to clear a regulatory process first.

Miners are piling in too

Network competition has risen sharply alongside the price, which is a genuine signal of participation rather than speculation.

New computing power flowing into Zcash pushed estimated mining revenue for the Z15 Pro, a common Zcash mining machine, below late-August levels despite the token roughly doubling. More miners competing for the same block rewards means each earns less.

That is what a rising hashrate does, and it indicates operators are committing hardware on the expectation that prices hold. It also raises the network’s security budget.

The rally has spilled into other privacy tokens, with Dash among those moving on the read-across.

What to watch

The single most useful number from here is futures open interest and which direction the positioning leans.

At over $2 billion with leverage still expanding, ZEC is set up for volatility in both directions. If shorts continue building against a rising price, another squeeze becomes possible. If longs have crowded in after a 100% month, the unwind would be sharper.

The second is whether ZCSH keeps attracting genuine inflows once the price stops moving vertically. The fund has been trading for less than two weeks, and $34.4 million in net inflows against $414 million in assets means the vast majority of what it holds arrived with the trust conversion rather than from new buyers.

Zcash has had the best year of any major cryptocurrency, rising roughly 2,300%. The question is whether a coin built to make transactions invisible can keep climbing while attracting this much attention.

FAQ

Why did Zcash jump above $1,000?
Roughly $40 million in short positions were liquidated in 24 hours, forcing buying that pushed the price higher. Growing assets in Grayscale’s ZCSH ETF and a broader risk-on session provided the backdrop.

How much new money has the ETF attracted?
Net inflows since the 25 August launch are at least $34.4 million. The fund’s growth from $304 million to $414.7 million is mostly price appreciation, since it inherited assets from Grayscale’s existing Zcash Trust.

Why does Zcash have an ETF when Monero does not?
The SEC closed its investigation into Zcash in January 2026, clearing the regulatory path. No comparable resolution exists for Monero, which remains absent from most US exchanges.
